The marvelously mustachioed Salvador Dalí was one of the surrealist movement’s most prominent artists, and you can explore a sprawling collection of his work right here in Florida at the Salvador Dali Museum.
Paintings
Dalí’s surrealist imagination is on vibrant display throughout the museum, with paintings that showcase his technical mastery and far-side creativity. Two decades after completing his timeless “Persistence of Memory,” the artist returns to the dreamlike scene with “The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory,” which updates the imagery with ominous themes fit for the 1950s zeitgeist. Dalí’s use of nowhere landscapes brings your attention to the foreground in “The First Days of Spring,” which features the incorporation of photos for a subtle collage effect. Before he delved into the surrealist movement, Dalí created some fine impressionist-inspired works like “Port of Cadaqués,” with its thick brush strokes waving gently like the moonlit tide.
Sculpture and Objects
While surrealist paintings are often the first images that come to mind when one hears the name Dalí, the artist also created an abundance of three-dimensional works, many of which are now on display in the museum’s Objects collection. Here, you’ll see bronze sculptures cast from original wax creations Dalí formed with his own hands, often while taking in the Mediterranean sun at the water’s edge. This exhibit features “Cabeza de caballo riendo,” or the head of a laughing horse, as well as the “Carmen la crotalos,” a representation of the opera figure Carmen dancing with the famous flamenco instruments known as castanets.
