If you’re looking for something fun to do this summer, the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature is a great place to visit and learn! As Florida’s largest natural history museum, they interpret the region from the Pleistocene to today and highlight fossils of Florida’s earliest animals, Montague Tallant collection of prehistoric archeological artifacts, and Environmental Hall, which focuses on Florida’s ecology and biodiversity.
The Planetarium
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature Planetarium is a premier astronomy facility on Florida’s west coast. The Planetarium has a brand-new state-of-the-art Digistar 6 dual projection system that provides amazing views of updated astronomy discoveries. With this new system, Bishop Museum is also able to share live events. This allows guests to explore the universe through visual journeys through the solar system and beyond.
Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature is also home to a Manatee habitat. The rehabilitation habitat was newly renovated and modeled after a cypress spring and can hold up to 60,000 gallons of water. This rehabilitation habitat houses manatees that were rescued in the wild because of illness or injury. There is an above and underwater viewing for guests who visit the exhibit.
Bishop has been rehabilitating manatees since 1998 and was a founding member of the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership in 2001. The habitat mimics a cypress spring to provide the manatees with a similar environment to the wild one they are used to. This habitat was the home of the oldest known manatee in the world, on record, who passed away in 2017 at 69 years old! If interested, guests can become manatee foster friends to help support these manatees.
